Guillermo Del Toro Part 1

In this episode half of the SGS team were away in NY while Wayne and Justin stayed behind and caught up on #GuillermoDelToro's back catalogue and watched #Mimic and #PansLabyrinth. We had a change of environment and recorded this as part of a #DelToro movie night in the lead up to his new film #CrimsonPeak. The acoustics were not ideal as we recorded in Darkest-Timeline Justin's TV room on a very hot night. So please accept our apologies for the fan in the background and a minor step down in audio quality. However, we do believe the content makes up for it, especially during Pans Labyrinth which can be found at the 22 minute mark.

This episode is filled with extended rants, opinions and left wing sentimentalities. The topic of discussion was the #Watchmen film,  said a lot of hurtful things especially about the comedian. Still much praise was given but it's irrelevant soon there will be a flame war, millions will listen and send in fiery feedback because there are good films and evil ones and even in the face of dial up speeds the evil films must be punished  I shall not compromise in this.

Police Academy: 30th Anniversary

In this episode  we discuss the 1984 classic comedy #PoliceAcademy, starring #SteveGuttenberg, #BubbaSmith, #GeorgeGaynes and #MichaelWinslow.

We examine the stereotypes, the characters, the legacy, and whether or not the Police Academy film series ended because they could not make the movies any shorter.

Our response to the film was divisive. Wayne thought it was great and that it stood the test of time and considers it the #CitizenKane of comedic cop movies. The Justin's found it amusing but not substantially great. Michelle face-palmed herself at the stupidity of the Police Academy franchise and cannot believe they were able to make as many films as they did.

Star Wars: A New Hope (1977)

Bryan is back for a bumper episode, #StarWars: #EpisodeIV #ANewHope, starring #MarkHamill, #HarrisonFord, #CarrieFisher, #AnthonyDaniels, #PeterMayhew and #JamesEarlJones.

Our primary focus was to look at the impact this film had on the #1970s. Through this discussion we look at the initial reception of Star Wars, the changes made to the film over the last 38 years and how it felt to see Star Wars for the very first time back in #1977.

We also get behind the scenes and look at the origins of the film, what #GeorgeLucas expected of the film, the deals he had to make and his bet with #StevenSpielberg.

The audio embedded is from the original teaser trailer released in 1976. We used this instead of the traditional #JohnWilliams score to reflect on what it would have been like to have seen Star Wars in its original run.

Don Bluth's Titan A.E.

In this episode we discuss the final #DonBluth film, #TitanAE, cowritten by #JossWhedon, and starring the vocal talents of #MattDamon, #DrewBarrymore, #BillPullman, #NathanLane, and one of our favourites #JohnLeguizamo.

This is a hard to find film that is out of print in Australia, but has become a cult favourite amongst #Firefly and #Serenity fans for its connections to #JossWhedon and also to animation fans for transcending Cell to CGI animation and utilising #2D and #3Danimation from Industrial Light and Magic. While we had mixed responses to the film, as two of our podcasters loved it, and two were indifferent, but the level of work did not go under appreciated.

The topics we cover include the changeover from 2D to 3D, the end of Don Bluth's career, the rise of Joss Whedon, how much credit does Joss Whedon really deserve, and last but not least, we examine the merits of the film; from story to structure, to voicework, and whether or not the film condones genocide.

Mar 5, 2015

In this episode we explore the latest film from The #Wachowski's. While we all had differing ideas on what this film wanted to be, one thing we all agreed on was that the characters played by #MilaKunis and #ChanningTatum were terribly written but we loved #EddieRedmayne's #MarlonBrando impersonation. Space Princess Justin introduced us to the homages that the film paid, but all Wayne could see were comparisons to the #SuperMarioBros. Movie from 1993.

Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)

In the latest episode, which will be our 41st episode, we discuss #Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) directed by Alejandro G. #Iñárritu, starring #MichaelKeaton, #EdwardNorton, #EmmaStone, #NaomiWatts and #ZachGalifianakis in a film about a washed up actor trying to reinvent himself as a serious actor with an adaptation of #RaymonCarver. This is one of those rare discussions that gets uploaded while the film is still in release. Throughout this discussion we discuss the reality vs. fantasy aspects of the film, whether or not the film works beyond a technical level, if Ed Norton was playing himself or #RobertDowneyJnr and life in the theatre. We also discuss Hollywood actors who head to broadway, as well classic Mchael Keaton movies.

College Humour's 'Coffee Town'

In this episode that pulled from our stash of banked up episodes we would to present to you a little seen film known as #CoffeeTown. This is a film produced by and made for #CollegeHumour, this was written and directed by #BradCopeland, who was one of the head writers on #ArrestedDevelopment and stars #GlennHowerton of #It'sAlwaysSunny in Philadelphia, #SteveLittle of #Eastbound&Down (#KennyPowers), #BenSchwartz and #JoshGroban and #JakeJohnson, these are some of the best comedic actors currently working on cable and network tv. Therefore this film is a not what you'd expect from a film produced for a website.

We also added in a few details about our upcoming giveaway, if you want to be in the runnning write us a quick review at  iTunes or Stitcher if you are an android user, or you hate Apple and want to piss on #SteveJobs grave.

In our first recording of 2015, the Soylent GreenScreen crew discuss some of the best and worst films of the summer/christmas break, and yes, to our international listeners, it is summer here in Australia.

We each chose five films that we wanted to discuss. Surprisngly, #Paddington was one of favourite films of the christmas break. Other films of notable mention were #TheImitationGame, #TheHobbit: The Battle of Keeping a Franchise Alive, and a dishonourable mention to #Taken 'bloody' 3. Yes, one of us got sucked into seeing what can only be compared to a steaming pile of #LeprechaunShit, as in, something unbelievably bad.

In this episode, that we recorded right after our first recording of 2015 (Will Be Up shortly), we discuss our favourite Australian Films and why they are of cultural significance.

Wayne's preferred Australian film was #YahooSerious' #YoungEinstein, the SGS team thought he was nuts for claiming there was educational value in the film but Wayne argued that it serves as a good and memorable introduction to the greatest minds of the early 20th century, but his favourite scene was the kitten pie.

Regular Justin's choice Australian film was #RomperStomper as this film shows a darker side to #Australian culture and introduced the world to #RussellCrowe.

Darkest-Timeline Justin, suggests that one of the most important films is #NotQuiteHollywood as the film is both entertaining and informative, while providing a concise introduction to a forgotten era of Australian film making.

Michelle's go to Australian Film was #TheDish, starring #SamNeill, written and directed by #RobSitch and co written by #SantoCilauro, #JaneKennedy and #TomGleisner. This was the most contemporary of our choices, and while we referenced #TheCastle, The Dish was her preferred film due to the historiography of the story as Sitch and co tell a story of Australia's involvement of the #Apollo11 #MoonLanding which was not as well known as it should have been.

We, at the Soylent GreenScreen Podcast hope you had a great #AustraliaDay, and we'd love to know what some of your favourite Australian films are.

Footloose 30th Anniversary

We recorded this episode on #Footloose as part of our #1984 retrospective that included #PoliceAcademy, #SixteenCandles, #RevengeofTheNerds, #Gremlins and #TheKarateKid. We discuss the legacy, the careers of #KevinBacon, #ChrisPenn, and #JohnLithgow, themes of grief and loss, and the #comingofage genre. We also discuss #VinceVaughn starring remake of #GusVanSant's intepretation of #AlfredHitchcock's #psycho and how it is has been reevaluated as an art film. We also hypothesise that this film may have the same template as an #AmericanWestern while also having a lot in common with #TheKarateKid.

As 2014 drew to a close we sat down to discuss our favourite films of the year. Some of our answers were surprising, and some of our favourite films were unheard of by each other. Yet some films such as #Nightcrawler, #CaptainAmerica #WinterSoldier, and #DawnOfThePlanet ended up on multiple lists. Michelle on the other hand decided to cover not only films made in 2014, but films she saw in 2014 but did not get to podcast about.

Being that the discussion stretched to over two hours, we had to cut it in two parts. This is part one, where we discuss films from 10 through to 6.

We recently got some feedback from a fellow podcaster who goes by the name Evil Dave. Evil Dave is the host of the InsideOutcast from GeekPlanet.com. He was kind enough to answer some of our questions regarding Karate training and the origins of Martial Arts, for which we greatly appreciated. This was very informative and gave us a deeper appreciation of the film and Martial Arts in general.

If you haven't listened to our Karate Kid episode, or want to go back and listen again, you can find it here on iTunes ... The Karate Kid 30th Anniversary episode or if you are an Android user, we recommend Stitcher

Thanks Evil Dave,

In this episode we discuss the 1984 film, #RevengeOfTheNerds, starring #RobertCarradine (#LizzieMaguire, #DjangoUnchained), #AnthonyEdwards (#TopGun, #ER, #Accepted), #JohnGoodman (#Roseanne, #TheBigLebowski, #KingRalph), #TedMcGinley (#MarriedWithChildren) #CurtisArmstrong (#Moonlighting), and #BryanTochi (#PoliceAcademy, #TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles).

This is a much loved film within certain circles, and some of our podcasters love this film, yet, not everyone of the SGS team was a fan. Through this discussion we hypothesise whether or not Louis was a hero or creepy #psychopathic villain who was pushed too far, and whether the #LambdaLambda fraternity were really that bad.

We also examine some of the more comntroversial elements of Revenge of The Nerds and whether these #nerds are as inspiring as they have been given credit for. We also touch upon other forms of nerd humour such as #TheBigBangTheory and the referencs to Revenge of The Nerds in #AmericanSplendour.
