Sixteen Candles: 30th Anniversary

It's almost Christmas and that means it's time to celebrate a very special birthday. That's right join us as we celebrate the birthday of #SamanthaBaker played by #MollyRingwald in the #JohnHughes classic #SixteenCandles, also starring #AnthonyMichaelHall and #JohnCusack. Whilst we're on birthdays did you know that the film turned 30 this year? Join Wayne, Michelle and the two Justin's as we take a look at this cult teen comedy and see if it has stood the test of time.

Our series of 1984 retrospective episodes continue into our latest Christmas special with the 1984 Christmas classic, #Gremlins, directed by #JoeDante and presented by #StevenSpielberg. Through this episode we discuss the influence of Gremlins, the tightrope this film walks between horror and comedy, the absurdity of #PhoebeCates speech, and the film references throughout the movie. We also attempt to uncover whether the film references such as #SnowWhite and #InvasionOfTheBody Snatchers have any hidden meanings and if the Gremlins are an allegory for atheism.

Ernest Saves Christmas

In this episode, The SGS team discuss the modern #Christmas #CultClassic, #ErnestSavesChristmas. Through this discussion we focus on the legacy of the late, great #JimVarney (#BeverlyHillBillies, #ToyStory) and the irreplaceable comic brilliance he brought to the character of #ErnestPWorrell.

We also examine the formula of #Christmasfilms; we go off on a tangent about #DrWho and a few random topics of discussion, because you never know where a conversation about Ernest P. Worrell will take you.

Rambo: First Blood (1982) / Rambo (2008)

In the latest episode of The Soylent GreenScreen Podcast Wayne, Michelle and The Justins take on #Rambo to discuss whether these are silly action films or if there is something else going within this character.

We cover the usage of #PostVietmanAmerica and whether #FirstBlood is an #anti-war film, the #Frankenstein themes, whether the sheriff was right to want Rambo to leave, and the importance of #ColonelTrautman. We also compare First Blood to #TheIncredibleHulk TV series.

In the second half we examine the most recent 2008 Rambo film, simply titled, Rambo. This was the first Rambo film to be directed by #SylvesterStallone. In this part of the episode we discuss the excessive violence, the usage of the #BurmeseGenocide and how this film shed some light on a clonflict that had been largely ignored in the west. We also discuss how #Stallone was able to cast genuine #FreedomFighters in this film, why this film was banned in certain countries.

We also examine the series in general and how Rambo was trapped within the #franchisemachinery of the #1980s.

Sasquatch: Strange Wilderness/Saquatch Dumpling Gang

In this episode The SGS team goes searching for #Sasquatch, but all we get is more #JustinLong. In the first half we discuss the #HappyMadison produced, #StrangeWilderness, starring #SteveZahn (#Treme, #DiaryOfAWimpyKid), #JonahHill (#21JumpStreet, #Accepted, #MoneyBall) #KevinHeffernan (#SuperTroopers, #Beerfest, #ClubDread), #JeffGarlin (#TheGoldbergs, #CurbYourEnthusiasm) and #RobertPatrick (#Terminator2, #XFiles). Through our discussion we try to figure out if #AdamSandler produces these movies as a tax dodge, the brilliance of #SteveZahn and #JustinLong and the ways that they pulled together a pretty fantastic comedic cast for a film that was loathed by critics and audiences upon release, but is gradually developing a cult following for the way they parody TV wildlife personalities such as #BearGrills (#ManVsWild) and #SteveIrwin (#TheCrocodileHunter), and America's obsession with #Bigfoot.

In the second half we discuss the very low budget Indie, kids comedy The #SasquatchDumplingGang (AKA #TheSasquatchGang). This was another Justin Long film that costarred #JeremySumpter (#PeterPan, #Frailty, #FridayNightLights), #JoeyKern (#SuperTroopers, #CabinFever), #JonGries (#MonsterSquad, #Lost, #NapoleonDynamite), #CarlWeathers (#Rocky, #Predator, #ActionJackson), #StephenTobolowsky (#Sneakers, #GroundhogDay), and #JonHeder (#NapoleonDynamite, #BladesofGlory).

We discussed the history of The #DumplingGang films that inspired this film, the inspiration of #NapoleonDynamite. The #comingofage story, and theorize about why Sasquatch is often used in kids’ films.

Ghostbusters: 30th Anniversary

Continuing our retrospective episodes on classic horror and supernatural films for 2014 we rewatched and studied up on Ghostbusters to provide our listeners with some deeper insights into this transgenerational cult classic. Throughout this episode we examine the development of Ghostbusters and the journey #DanAykroyd went through in bringing this to the screen. We also discuss the future of ghostbusters as a franchise, the #RealGhostbusters animated series, some trivia such as the ironic twist of the voice of #Venkman in the cartoon being the same guy who voiced #Garfield. We also touch upon the loss of #HaroldRamis, Dan Aykroyd's obsessions, #BillMurray's refusal to return to the series and what went wrong with #Ghostbusters2.

In the scond part of our epic podcasting night with Michelle's dad we discuss the 1956 version of Jules Verne's Around The World in 80 Days, starring David Niven, Shirley McClaine, Cantinflas and a swag of celebrity cameos ranging from Caesar Romero to Buster Keaton.

Through this discussion Bryan (Michelle's dad) explains the importance of this film and why it ran for three and a half years. He also introduces us to the Todd AO processor and how they used the hot airballoon as a way of marketing Todd AO. Todd AO was the foundation of high fidelity surround and the widescreen 70mm format as we know it today. Before this time they had to use three cameras and three projectors to present cinerama. With Todd AO they were able to record a widescreen image on a single strip of film with six channel surround sound. So this was a ground breaking cinematic achievement. Bryan also points out the number of celebrity cameos in this film and brings us a deeper and more complex understanding of the era that Around The World in 80 Days was made.

In this episode the Soylent GreenScreen is joined by Michelle's dad, Bryan. Bryan was generous enough to be our special guest and share his memories of being raised by the manager of the Esquire theatre, Gil Whelan (1924 - 2014). Gil managed some of Melbourne's finest cinemas from the 1950s through to the 70s. Gil was there for a time that History seems to forgotten now that cinema has been subsumed by the multiplex.

This conversation with Bryan stretched out to over 2 hours so we broke it into three parts. The first part is focused on South Pacific (1958), whilst we all agreed that this wasn't the best of the films in cinema history, it ran for three years at The Esquire on Bourke Street. Thus cementing its place in cinema history.

The Sound of Music Ran for a staggering 140 weeks in Melbourne's #ParisTheatre, perhaps better known to history buffs as The #LyceumTheatre. The Paris/Lyceum was pulled down in the 70s and replaced by The #TivoliArcade.

In this mini episode it's up to Wayne and Darkest timeline Justin to discuss the latest #Marvel film #GuardiansOfTheGalaxy, directed by #JamesGunn and starring #ChrisPratt, #ZoeSaldana and the voices of #BradleyCooper and #VinDiesel. We discuss the media, the highs and lows of Robert Downey Jnr. and his career, the brilliance of Woody Harrelson, why #QuentinTarantino only gets a “Story By” credit and not a screenplay credit and the ways that Natural Born Killers ruined Michelle’s love of #RodneyDangerfield. We also discuss Oliver Stone and how his films are male centric and question whether Natural Born Killers was made for an adult audience and whether or not they were serial killers or mass murderers, or even if it matters.

In the second half we discuss the 1967 film, #BonnieandClyde. Through this discussion we examine the influence of Bonnie and Clyde on #Americancinema and the ways in which the media portrays these characters. We also look at the hysteria of #Bonnie and #Clyde and attempt to figure out if they were deluding themselves into thinking they were heroes.

In our 17th episode from The Soylent Greenscreen Podcast, Darkest-Timeline Justin, Michelle, Regular Justin and Wayne discuss three films about fantasy women and unfulfilled men trying to establish their identities. While these films tell the same story of the inanimate object developing a life beyond the control of the owner/creator they all present unique worlds, differing genres and three men at different stages of their emotional development.

The first film is the 2007 contemporary comedy-drama Lars and The Real Girl starring Ryan Gosling as Lars and Emily Mortimer as Karin. This was one of the few films that we all gave a similar rating.

Lars &TRG

Our second film was the 2013 Spike Jonz science-fiction-romantic-drama Her starring Joaquin Pheonix as Theodore and Scarlett Johanssenn as the voice of Samantha.

Her

Our last film and perhaps the most controversial was the 2012 fantasy drama with darker undertones, Ruby Sparks. This film was written by Zoe Kazan who plays Ruby, with Paul Dano as Calvin.

Throughout the discussion we look at the X-men film franchise and how this film surprisingly feels like a real film with actual characters. We also look at the time travel dynamics in comparison to other time travel stories, an explanation of why the #StarTrek films needed a reboot and X-men didn't, why #ProfessorX still can't walk after coming back from the dead and how Bryan Singer may have pulled off the greatest retcon in film history.

Hobo with a Shotgun / Bad-Ass

From the #SGSarchives we present our discussion of the 2011, #Grindhouse inspired #Canadian film #HoboWithAShotgun starring #RutgerHauer (#Bladerunner, #BuffyTheVampireSlayer, #TrueBlood). This is followed up with a comparative look at the #DannyTrejo (#Machete, #Desperado, #BreakingBad) 2012 film, #BadAss. This film was inspired by a real altercation that became a #YouTube hit known as #EpicBeardMan.

Throughout this discussion we look at extreme violence and revenge stories. We discuss the themes as well as the peculiar absence of #RobertRodrigue and #QuentinTarantino from #hobo by having no association to a film that was sold on the mock preview the filmmakers produced from a Robert Rodriguez #GrindhouseCompetition.

Godzilla (2014)

In this episode we follow up our previous #Godzilla podcast, in which we discussed #Godzilla1956, #Godzilla1985, and #GodzillaFinalWars, with a review of the 2014 version of Godzilla, directed by #GarethEdwards and starring #BryanCranston (#BreakingBad, #MalcolmInTheMiddle),  #AaronTaylor-Johnson (#Avengers #AgeofUltron, #KickAss), #KenWatanabe (#Inception, #TheLastSamurai) and #ElizabethOlsen (#LiberalArts, #MarthaMarcyMayMarlene).

We had differing degrees of interest in this film, despite this, the flaws were apparent to all of us. Beyond the flaws there was something oddly engaging about this film that was harder to pinpoint than we anticipated.

John Favreau's Chef

In this mini episode Wayne and Michelle discuss #Chef, written, directed and starring #JohnFavreau, co-starring #JohnLeguizamo, #DustinHoffman, #ScarlettJohansson, #SofiaVergara, #RobertDowneyJnr, #AmySedaris and #OliverPlatt. This is one of those films that may slip below the radar during the Blockbuster film season. However, we felt that this was one of the more honest and rereshing American films in some time. Through this twenty minute episode we discuss John Favreau's career, #foodporn and how bizarre a conversation with #RobertDowneyJnr. may be.

Superman Returns / Man of Steel

In this episode Wayne and Guest Podcaster, Mark discuss the two most recent #Superman films.

First film is #SupermanReturns, directed by #BryanSinger (#XMen, #AptPupil, #UsualSuspects), starring #BrandonRouth (#Atom from #Arrow. #Chuck, #Zach&MiriMakeAPorno), #KateBosworth (#StillAlice, #UnderTheSea), #ParkerPosey (#Scream3, #Josie&ThePussycats, #HenryFool) and #KevinSpacey (#HouseOfCards, #AmericanBeauty)

We analyse the mature themes present in Superman returns, the despair and isolation in Brandon Routh's performance. Wayne believes this is a work of subtle brilliance, while Mark maintains a feeling of indifference to Routh. We also discuss #RichardDonner and #ChristopherReeve.

We follow this up with a deep focus on #ManOfSteel, directed by #ZackSnyder (#BatmanvSuperman, #300, #Watchmen), starring #HenryCavill (#TheTudors, #ManFromUNCLE), #AmyAdams (#BigEyes, #AmericanHustle, #Enchanted), #MichaelShannon (#ElvisAndNixon, #BoardwalkEmpire, #TakeShelter), and #RussellCrowe (#TheWaterDiviner, #ABeautifulMind).

We assess the three main issues with #ManOfSteel and whether it truly is superior to Superman Returns. The discussion comes full circle by analysing each film side by side to figure out what these films got right and if given the choice, which film would we choose.

Our intention was to compare and contrast the two films, once we got chatting an hour and a half flew by. So we hope you enjoy this special episode. As always you can find us on iTunes or Stitcher and you can follow us @SGSPod

Godzilla: The First 60 Years

In this episode, Justin from the Darkest Timeline, our resident #Godzilla afficionado takes us on a sixty year cinematic journey through the highs and lows of Godzilla.

The first film was the clasic #Toho Godzilla (1954). This was followed by #Godzilla1985 (1984) that is arguably a remake/reboot/sequel depending which of the SGS Crew you ask. The Godzilla marathon concluded with the 2004 film #GodzillaFinalWars, which felt like a much longer film than it really was.

Throughout this discussion, The Soylent GreenScreen Crew touch on classic monster and disaster films, how good or bad they can be and whether the passion of those involved translates to what is on screen. The crew also discuss science run amok, Godzilla as a #Hiroshima allegory, the the futility of man trying to control what cannot be controlled, what causes franchises to collapse, and why Godzilla is still relevant.

Sex Comedies: For a Good Time, Call / Zack & Miri Make a Porno

In this episode Michelle takes the gang on a journey through the sex industry as depicted in contemporary romantic comedies that challenge the genre conventions of the Romantic Comedy.  These films are #ForAGoodTime,Call (2012) and #ZackandMiri Make a #Porno (2009).

Throughout this episode we discuss #JustinLong recycling gay characters that he has a reputation for, #ElizabethBanks and how effortlessly adorable she is, how Sweetly profane #KevinSmith can be, the highs and lows of #SethRogen's career and the need for genuine afection as depicted in these films. This is followed by a movie round up that morphs into an in depth discussion of The #Wachowski's #CloudAtlas, which we may return to in the future.

In the latest episode the SGS team journey through the cult of #MikeJudge films to determine whether cvilization is moving towards an #idiocracy and if Mike Judge is creating an expanded cinematic universe where #StephenRoot is God.

The first film we discuss is #OfficeSpace, starring #RonLivingston (#Swingers, #TheCooler), #JennierAniston (#Friends, #FriendsWithMoney, #RumourHasIt), #GaryCole (#TheBradyBunchMovie, #ASimplePlan, #AmericanGothic), #StephenRoot (#Dodgeball, #FindingNemo, #Newsradio).

The Amazing Spider-man Sequel (A.K.A. ASS)

One of our earliest episodes, where Darkest Timeline Justin and Wayne review The #AmazingSpider-man 2: #RiseofElectro and discuss what could very well be the worst hollywood tentpole film in a very long time.

Darkest Timeline Justin says, #AmazingSpider-man Sequel (#ASS) Is a real stamina test. "At 2 and a half hours it felt like my eyes were going to drop out." On the upside #Spiderman's costume is much improved and the scenes of him flying through the streets are the best they've ever been. That said, the movie itself is a disjointed mess mostly interested in setting up future installments and spin offs rather than telling an actual story. #PeterParker (#AndrewGarfield) as a hero is still a character that is hard to connect with. The love story between him and #GwenStacey (#EmmaStone) is tiresome and after a while you just sort of try to tune it out or use it to relax your eyes. Character behaviour is driven by what the story needs rather than by their own personality and needs. The fight scenes are stunning but it does suffer from it being CGI smackdown between two characters. So what is the story about? Well nothing really there isnt one, it's just a garbled mess. 3/10

Wayne on the other hand thought ASS was so bad that he gave it a deficit score of -2/10. Because 0 wasn't low enough. If you want to hear why listen to the episode. If you don't agree you can twittify us @SGSpod or comment on our facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/soylentgreenscreenpodcast

Veronica Mars / Captain America: Winter Soldier

In this episode Wayne and Darkest-timeline Justin discuss #VeronicaMars, starring #KirstenBell, #JerryO'connell, and EnricoColantoni. and #CaptainAmerica: #WinterSoldier, directed by the #russo brothers and starring #ChrisEvans, #ScarlettJohansson, #SamuelLJackson and #RobertRedford and the ways in which these films reinvented their respective genres. Yes, there are character spoilers but we promise that the mystery Veronica Mars solves is not discussed or given away. In the second half we discuss the ways that Captain America: Winter Soldier reinvented #espionagefilms and #paranoiafilms of the 60s and 70s on a grand scale. This is followed by further discussion on #TheRaid2 reinventing the fight/action film, with a few references to #Ozploitation films.

Premiere Episode: John Landis's Schlock A.K.A. Banana Monster

This was the first episode we ever recorded, back in april, 2014, so it is rough, by our own admission, but we promise, that we do get better, and we hope you come back.

In the first episode of The Soylent GreenScreen Podcast Wayne, Justin, Justin and Michelle take on John Landis' first film, #Schlock A.K.A Banana Monster (1973) to determine if #JohnLandis has a plan or if his films are simply crazy hijinks. This is followed up with further investigation into the running gags about #friedchicken in John Landis films such as #BluesBrothers and KentuckyFriedMovie plus a discussion on more contemporary films that winds up questioning the acting skills of #NickFrost. Sorry #NickFrost, if you do listen, we really do like you, we just were'nt fans of #CubanFury.
